Summit County Announces Finalized 2020 County Fair Events
Summit County, Utah (June 11, 2020) — This evening, Summit County Manager Tom Fisher met with the Summit County Fair Board to announce final cancellations and modifications to the 2020 Summit County Fair due to economic and health concerns resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“I would like nothing more than to feel the right thing to do is to hold the Fair without alteration,” Fisher said. “However, our current circumstances with a public health emergency, the associated economic effects that will lower revenues drastically in 2020 and the way that the Fair is traditionally financed means that is not possible this year.”
In addition to previous cancellations, the PRCA Rodeo, the Rodeo Queen Contest, the Little Buckaroo Timed Events, the Little Buckaroo Princess Contest and the Home Arts Exhibit will be canceled in 2020. The Summit County Jr. Livestock Show and Sale and the Miss Summit County Pageant will be held in modified formats to be announced in coming weeks. The USU Extension Office will also recognize 4-H Fair Entries, details to be announced.
Following a meeting in mid-May, the Fair Board, County Manager and Summit County Events Special Events Manager announced several changes to the Fair’s format. Over the past month, the group continued to meet and discuss the financial viability and health risks of remaining events. Summit County anticipates 40-70 percent less revenue from the Transient Room Tax, which provided a substantial public dollar subsidy to the County Fair in recent years.
“I expect that most think the County Fair nets a profit for the County or that our ticketed events net a profit,” Fisher said. “None of that is true. This level of subsidy would need to increase even more if we were to hold an event like the rodeo in a modified format that would reduce ticket sales that helps support the event. We will not waste this opportunity to rethink and regroup to make the Summit County Fair a better event and be more responsible with public dollars moving forward.”
